The word Psychopomp means conductor of souls. The activity of a primary Psychopomp is to ably assist those in need of an experienced guide when transitioning to the afterlife. Psychopomps are beings who may be angels, ancestors, spirit guides, animals or beings of the Otherworld whose role is to assist those in transition to the afterlife. Some psychopomp beings assist other transitions or life passages.
The transitions of souls to the afterlife most often happens seamlessly with the help of these primary psychopomps. Other times, impediments or obstacles occur resulting in a lack of transitioning. These obstacles could be sudden death, violent death, strong attachments, mass or personal trauma. At this point, living human psychopomps aid in the process of assisting through facilitating the connection to the primary psychopomps and supporting the transition of the deceased to their afterlife.
